In 1990s, the benefits of coco peat was discovered, it turns out to be very useful in horticultural. Coco peat can increase the water holding capacity of the potting mix. What differentiates them?

Coco peat naturally has higher electrical conductivity or EC, this conductivity is determined by the amount of ions(salt) in the nutrients. EC value is important because you need to give the right amount of nutrients to plants, not too much, not too little.

Thus, coco peat is categorized as High EC and Low EC. 

LOW EC

As a growing medium, it is better to keep the EC as low as possible because plants have its own internal EC, and potting mix has other nutrients too. In order to lower the EC, water is best way to decrease the value, hence low EC coco peat is also known as ‘washed-coco peat’. The standard EC value is < 0.5 mS/cm.

HIGH EC
